What is The Terminal List, the Amazon series with Chris Pratt as Action Hero worth? (critical)

Fire-spitting guns, angry Navy Seals, good old revenge in the background… An old-fashioned thriller, effective at times, although embodied by a surprisingly self-effacing Chris Pratt.

We had left him hunting dinosaurs at the movies. Chris Pratt puts away his good-natured adventurer costume to put on his Action Hero bulletproof vest. The kind of mission he had already attempted to accomplish with The Tomorrow War, exactly a year ago, on Amazon, without much success. This time, it’s still on Prime Video but with a series that Chris Pratt plays the trigger. He is the star of The Terminal Listshown in preview at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival this Saturday, before its streaming release on July 1st.

Amazon

A dark and tortured conspiracy thriller, this adaptation of Jack Carr’s book follows a Navy SEAL who survives an ambush against his team during a major secret mission in the Persian Gulf. Reece returns home, to his family, with the painful memory of this event in mind and wonders about his responsibility. He is not the only one. NCIS will begin to investigate to try to understand what could have gone wrong and what is going on in Reece’s head. Either way, it’s complicated…

The director of Training Day and The Equalizer, Antoine Fuqua, is at the helm to stage the bodybuilding sequences of this military thriller which too often struggles to aim straight. Effective when playing the old-fashioned “Action flick” card, The Terminal List manages to instill a cutthroat vibe, an exciting intensity, marked by some great sequences of merciless “gun fight”, in the vein of a Reacher (released earlier this year on Prime).

Except that Reacher knew how not to take himself too seriously, playing the cool vintage card, without becoming corny. The Terminal List tends to fall into these pitfalls, dragging its hero through the twists and turns of an exhausting psychological labyrinth, shrouded in a pale-blue light that roughly mirrors its hero’s blues. By the way Chris Pratt never really seems to be what it embodies. Never really involved, he goes through this Terminal List like a ghost, overplaying the veteran at the end of his rope.

To be reserved for fans of military series, who have never won NCIS or devour every episode of Seal Team.
