The actress is preparing to host the opening ceremony, for which she wrote the speech with screenwriter Thomas Bidegain.
Virginie Efira is almost ready to present the opening ceremony of the 75th Cannes Film Festival. She won’t be making the trip for nothing, since she will also be at the heart of two films screened on the Croisette: Don Juanby Serge Bozon with Tahar Rahim and See Paris againby Alice Winocour, where she will play opposite Benoît Magimel.
Chosen because it represents “a solar presence to celebrate cinema”according to the organizers, like Doria Tillier (2021), Monica Bellucci (2017 and 2003) or Audrey Tautou (2013), who held this role before her, the actress returns to the JDD on the responsibility that the animation of such a ceremony represents, explaining that she finds the stage fright felt when she animated the live broadcasts of The New Star. Stating that she wrote her speeches with Thomas Bidegain (the screenwriter ofA prophet and Rust and bone) and that she will immediately dive into the deep end, since she is shooting in Valérie Donzelli’s next film just before the start of the festivities, she details: “It’s still not the President of the Republic’s induction speech, huh! The idea is to find something short, simple, a little spoken to say that this festival is not just glamor on red carpet. I would like to remind you that it is in Cannes that films are born which are not algorithmic stories, which will travel to theaters all over the world. As far as I am concerned, it is the Palmes d’Or like Umbrellas of Cherbourg , Taxi Driver Where All That Jazz [Que le spectacle commence, 1980] who made me want to do this job. We have to find a way to say it.”
Same story with the Figaro : “I followed the festival a lot on television and I will find myself in the image I was watching, a bit like Mia Farrow in The Purple Rose of Cairo. Fortunately, it’s not a liner like the Césars, where the ceremony lasts two and a half hours, and I don’t have to dial a personal number, which is good because I’m neither Édouard Baer nor Valérie Lemercier! Cinema is political. It must be a place for understanding the world, a space where we can do, think, collectively. In the current context, troubled, fragile, it is essential that the festival brings its creativity, its density, and the eyes of the filmmakers.
This opening ceremony will be followed from 6:55 p.m. on Tuesday May 17 on France 2. Moreover, France Télévisions is setting up an unprecedented system this year to bring the Cannes festival to life in partnership with Brut, TikTok and Fortnite.
