The release of Top Gun: Maverick in streaming will depend on Tom Cruise

The film is not about to be available on VOD or on Paramount Plus in the United States.

Whether The Batman arrived on HBO Max 45 days after its theatrical release, and Doctor Strange 2 on Disney Plus 47 days later, Top Gun: Maverick isn’t it about to land on Paramount Plus or on VOD in the United States. Insider Matthew Belloni revealed on his podcast, The Town with Matthew Belloni (via Games Radar), that a deadline of 120 days, or four months, had been negotiated for the film. And that it could not be shortened without the agreement of its star and producer, Tom Cruise !

“Last we heard from Paramount, the window was 120 days, but Paramount would like to re-discuss this with Tom Cruise and negotiate a shorter window in order to generate revenue on home cinema, whether on premium VOD, or on their streaming Paramount Plus, which is yet to be determined. I know Paramount is very keen on streaming this movie soon. But if it continues to do well in theaters like it does now, Tom Cruise really has no reason to accept that, other than for the money, and he’s a big advocate for the theater ecosystem and he has control over this movie in this contract.”

Top Gun Maverick: the scene of “Great Balls of Fire” in an unpublished long version

As we know, Tom Cruise is extremely attached to cinema on the big screen. Last March, an article from the HollywoodReporter, titled “The Real Mission Impossible: Say No to Tom Cruise”, already reported tensions between Paramount and the actor on this issue. The latter being refractory to an exit from mission impossible 7 on Paramount Plus just 45 days after its theatrical release. In Cannes, during his master class, he also explained that he had never considered a streaming release for the last Top Gunpostponed for two years due to the Covid.

The figures, in any case, prove Tom Cruise right. Top Gun: Maverick surpassed one billion worldwide box office receipts in one month. And given the phenomenon around the film (which many spectators will see and see again in theaters), it is probably wiser to exploit it in theaters for as long as possible.

In France, Top Gun: Maverick will be available from September 29 for VOD purchase, then for VOD rental and on DVD and Blu-Ray on October 5.
