The author of Harry Potter thought she was talking to the Ukrainian president, until the discussion turned around Dumbledore’s sexuality!
JK Rowling was the victim of a prank this week. A bad joke from Vovan and Lexus, a duo of Russian comedians who have already pranked Elton John or George Bush. The main interlocutor pretended to be Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, whose country was invaded by the army of Vladimir Putin last February. Since the war broke out, this conflict has claimed thousands of lives and led to the flight of many inhabitants. “When JK Rowling was approached she thought she was talking about expanding her charity work in Ukraine, how best to help children and families who have been directly affected by this conflict in the region”explains the spokesperson for the author of Harry Potter. But the discussion was quite different…
Cannes 2022: Volodymyr Zelensky attacks Putin live during the opening ceremony
The man posing as Zelensky begins by congratulating Rowling on Harry Potter, before asking him questions about the making of the prequel or the details of his magical universe, which he believes should be changed at the time of the war in Ukraine. For example, he asks that the Russian actor Aleksandr Kuznetsov be cut off from fantastic animalsin which he plays Helmut. “Fantastic Beasts has been an interesting experience, I will definitely talk about it and see what I can do”, she answers seriously while taking notes. He then asks if the formula Avada Kedavra could be inscribed on Ukrainian missiles or if Harry Potter’s scar, the famous lightning bolt on the forehead, could be modified to resemble the Ukrainian trident, its original shape reminiscent too much of the Z of the extremists who plague the country. “I will see thatpromises Rowling before adding: I could talk about it directly on social networks, otherwise I think it will be picked up in the newspapers.” The exchange gets weirder and weirder, until he asks the author to confirm that Dumbledore is indeed gay, and adds: “At least he’s not dating a transgender!”, in reference to the scandals that erupted on social networks following the transphobic remarks shared by the author. The joke makes Rowling laugh, who then discovers the faces of three people who participated in the prankwhom the comedian passes off as his grandmothers who are magic fans.
This surreal video was shared on RuTube, Russia’s most popular platform, and JK Rowling’s reps immediately responded saying it had been “edited” and that it is“a distorted version that does not represent the real conversation.”
