Surprise ! Cate Blanchett had been announced, but was replaced by The Tree of Life actress.
The Cannes public was surprised last night when they discovered Jessica Chastain in the casting ofArmageddon Timethe new film by James Gray (The Immigrant, Ad Astra…) who is competing for the Palme d’Or this year. She plays Maryanne Trump, Donald Trump’s sister, in this film set in the Queen, New York, in the 1980s. The young hero, Paul (Banks Repeta), evolves in an artistic environment directly inspired by the environment from the director’s own youth. Maryanne Trump appears there for a scene: when she was a lawyer in New Jersey, she made a speech in front of the students of an austere private school, and it is this memory that gave rise to this sequence .
Originally, it was Cate Blanchett who was to interpret it. The director had explained, in March 2021: “Cate Blanchett will be playing Donald Trump’s sister in my movie, and that’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever said in my life! She’ll only be here for three days, she’s doing me a favor. She’ll have this long speech to say, it’s a scene that could steal the show from others. I tried to rewrite this speech as faithfully as possible, according to my memories. We don’t know why the actress didn’t shoot this scene in the end. Is it because of the filming postponements linked to the Covid-19 epidemic which strongly affected the city of New York and pushed the director to change his plans? He initially wanted to feature Robert De Niro and Oscar Isaac in the lead roles, but had to revise his plans as the actors were no longer available once new filming dates were locked in. It is possible that Chastain, recently Oscar winner for In the eyes of Tammy Faye, was finally cast on the advice of Anne Hathaway. The two actresses get along very well and the latter plays the mother of the young hero. Her father is played by Jeremy Strong and her grandfather by Anthony Hopkins. “Looks like I made an appearance at Cannes this year”had fun Jessica on Twitter, in reference to the fact that she is very often invited to the Croisette. This is where she broke through in 2011 thanks to The Tree of Lifeby Terrence Malick, and she has presented several other films there since, such as Lawless menin 2012, or The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigbyin 2014. She was also a member of the jury in 2017, as well as the godmother of the Chopard trophy, last year.
Yes Armageddon Time does not yet have a French release date, it hit the public at the Palais des Festivals yesterday. So we should talk about it very soon…
