Was it the heat wave that emptied cinemas of their spectators? This week, continuations are losing about half of their audience, or even more: -40% attendance for Downton Abbey 2 at -57% for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In this context, only two films have managed to cross the 100,000 admissions mark since last Wednesday: Doctor Strange 2which remains in the lead thanks to 614,758 more spectators spread out in front of 620 screens, i.e. just two million people displaced in a fortnight, and the novelty The Northman. Robert Eggers’ Vikings film was seen precisely by 132,172 curious people in 351 cinemas and took second place in the top. Then it’s the fall: the rest of the top 10 registers between 42,000 (Passengers of the night) and 96,000 entries (Dumbledore’s Secrets).

Even the two novelties that have entered this ranking are quite far: French comedy Farm Folies starts at 64,286 tickets sold in 460 theaters (68,000 if we count its previews), which gives it 7th place and The Dukethe posthumous film by Roger Michell, the director of Love at first sight in Noting Hill, is ninth with 51,296 tickets sold. Will the public return to the cinema more with the release of certain Cannes films? We’ll talk about it next week…
