Emily Blunt – Jungle Cruise: “It’s Dwayne the girl in this movie”

“I thought it was cool that it was Emily the ‘Indiana Jones’ of the duo”, answers Dwayne Johnson, amused.

Update of May 13, 2022: On this Friday night, Jungle Cruise will compete with one of the films that clearly inspired it (and which was already worn by The Rock!): The return of the mummy. The first will be broadcast on Canal+, as part of their blockbuster evening, and the second on TFX. When it was released last summer, First had been pleasantly surprised by this adventure film carried by a good duo: Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson. So here’s a little reader before (re) seeing it on television.

Interview of July 29, 2021: Adventure comedy Jungle Cruise is one of the good surprises of this summer, thanks in particular to the chemistry between its two main actors: Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson. Two stars who also get along very well behind the scenes, judging by our interview of the duo in the n°520 of First (July-August 2021, with Fast & Furious 9 In front page). Here is an exerpt.

Jungle cruise: Emily Blunt and The Rock, an amazing duo [critique]

After Pirates of the Caribbeanit’s THE new film based on a Disney attraction, does it put the pressure on you?

DJ: Hmm… (To Emily.) Do you want to answer first?

EB: No, go ahead, please. You are better than me on the subject.

DJ: OKAY. (He takes a deep breath.) I think I speak on our behalf by saying that inevitably, it represents an opportunity to be part of a story which, at its level, has accompanied many families all over the world, in their leisure time, their good times, for several decades. If we go back to the origins, the attraction has existed since 1955 anyway! Bringing this adventure to life in the cinema, and, we hope, building a bridge with those who have experienced and appreciated it, is a big challenge. The other challenge was the development of the film, which took some time. It was necessary to know how to adapt the thing correctly, by fleshing it out but without betraying the basic idea, to offer the best possible spectacle. The objective is obviously to satisfy Disney aficionados but also to transcend the initial attraction in order to please all the others. who will discover it with the film.

EB: You really did it!

What appealed to you about Frank and Lily, your characters respective?

EB: I was really drawn to…

DJ: (He points to himself.)

EB: I was really drawn to Dwayne Johnson, obviously. (Laughs.) I was seduced by Lily’s mentality, her state of mind, her thirst for discovery, her optimism… She’s a positive character. Every day she wakes up with hope. She also made me laugh with her reckless and imperturbable side. And then, she is ahead of her time… The action takes place in 1917, and we cannot say that she is a conformist! She is quick-witted, tenacious, determined. Deep down I think that’s what I liked: we are far from the “role of the girl in an adventure film”. By the way, Dwayne is the girl in this movie.

DJ: A big girl anyway. (Laughs.) It’s one of the strengths of the script. Since the first drafts, it is a scenario that I personally wrote; don’t trust the generic. (Laughs.) I thought it was cool that it was Emily the “IndianaJones” of the duo. At her side, you have this captain who does not have the same point of view as her, for many reasons. I really like what her character brings to the tone of the film, and what she represents too.

Dwayne, deep down, it had to be relaxing not to be the adventurer of the movie?

EB: Be careful, I’m not his boss either, it’s still a pair, but yes, it’s true that he is less defined by that side.

DJ: I liked it for once. The fact that my character doesn’t have the usual position one would expect. It’s actually relaxing not to be the one driving the action all the time. In addition, he is someone who gargles a lot, who galvanizes the crowd, who promises to solve all the problems…

EB: Frank is very cynical, after all.

DJ: Yes, we can even find it a little “malicious”, in his way. He’s an opportunist, and he can’t be trusted at all… All things I’ve never played before. It was exciting for me. Stick it to a “IndianaJones” which is its exact opposite, it’s interesting, even more so if it’s played by a woman.

EB: We both hung on to the dynamic of the characters, they are the antithesis of each other. As soon as they meet, you know it’s going to be fun to watch and there will be a side african queen Where To the pursuit of the green diamond. It’s the kind of duo where each is really the opposite of the other, in their way of thinking, their opinions, their identity.

DJ: It was really special to me, not just for those reasons, but because I’ve been a huge Emily fan for quite a while. But I wasn’t sure I would have the opportunity to work with her one day. Seriously: it started with monuments like Judi Dench while I was doing The Scorpion King

EB: It’s true, now that you mention it, I was so much more famous than you!

DJ: I was a loser in comparison, I kept asking myself: ” How could it happen? (Laughs.)

EB: Whereas when I was told about him, I didn’t understand who he was talking about. “You are going to tour with Dwayne Johnson. » Dave how? Who is that ?

DJ: “Dean Johnson? (Laughs.)
