After 8 years of absence, the director’s new film, in official competition at the Cannes festival, will be released in cinemas.
The Crimes of the Future marks the return of the filmmaker specializing in horror thrillers: David Cronenberg. Eight years later Maps To The Stars, the Canadian director returns to the Croisette to present his new feature film, in the running for the official competition of the 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. However, this is not what Cronenberg had imagined for this film, which he first intended to broadcast on a streaming platform.
Indeed, during an interview for varietythe director of Fly Explain : ” I’m sure I talked to Netflix and Amazon about this project, and it’s not something they wanted to do. I was very interested in streaming and the whole Netflix thing, but I think they’re very conservative. I mean they think like a Hollywood studio, and I thought it would be different. The difference is that Netflix can stream very cutting-edge series from Korea or Finland and say it’s a Netflix original, when it’s something they’ve acquired. But when they are the ones producing, they are very conservative. It has to be general public. »

And this isn’t the first time the Cronenberg-Netflix collaboration has ended in failure. They had already tried to work together on a series which was to be an adaptation of the novel Consumed, written in 2014 by the director. He details: “ We had gotten to two episodes, and then they decided not to. It disappointed me because I’m really interested in streaming in cinematic terms. I think it would be a great experience for me as a writer, creator and director. I might have the chance to live this experience one day. »
Waiting, Future Crimes will be visible in French cinemas from May 25, distributed by Metropolitan FilmExport. It tells how, while the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the human body is subject to new transformations and mutations. With the complicity of his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenzer (Viggo Mortensen), a famous performer, stages the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde shows. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator with the Office of the National Organ Registry, closely follows their practices. It is then that a mysterious group appears: they want to take advantage of Saul’s notoriety to reveal to the world the next stage of human evolution…
