Cannes 2022- day 1: Zelensky vs the “dictator” Putin, the speech of Vincent Lindon and Michel Hazanavicius for Coupez!

Every day, between the film, the interview and the fact of the day, the hot spot live from the 75th Cannes Film Festival.

Fact of the day: Volodymyr Zelensky speaks live at the opening ceremony

Just started, the Cannes film festival create the event. During a surprise ten-minute speech, broadcast by video at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky challenged the world of cinema and the West by attacking Vladimir Putin directly while quoting Apocalypse Now (“the smell of napalm in the early morning…“) and The dictator of Chaplin.

We will continue to fight, we have no other choice (…) I am convinced that the ‘dictator’ will lose“, Zelensky said. “We need a new Chaplin who will prove that today’s cinema is not silent.”

The emotion of the day: the committed speech of Vincent Lindon

After her moving speech in 2015, when she received the Performance Prize for The law of the market by Stéphane Brizé, Vincent Lindon delivered another significant speech at Cannes, this time as president of the jury. All in humility, he read a text in the form of reflection on the commitment of artists and the importance of art, saying “uncomfortable in comfort and privilege”, but too human to give it up“.

Evoking the dramas of the war, a few minutes before Zelensky’s intervention, he ended with these strong words: “I wonder if we’re not dancing on the Titanic.”

Movie of the day: Cut!

With this remake of a cult Japanese film released on the sly in France in 2019Michel Hazanavicius signs a delirious comedy where his dirty kid side works wonders. Cut! tells the story of the shooting of a zombie film disturbed by real zombies, a concept as simple as it is relentless, where the director makes his acting direction speak (it takes talent on both sides of the camera to play deceptively false and Romain Duris, Bérénice Bejo, Finnegan Oldfield, Gregory Gadebois, Jean-Pascal Zadi & co are not lacking). A perfect festival of laughter to open this Cannes 2022.

Tomorrow in Cannes:

Cannes does not give up: after Zelensky’s speech, it is the dissident Russian filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov who will launch the Competition with Tchaikovsky’s Wife. A few meters from the Palace, the atmosphere will be radically different since Jesse Eisenberg will open Critics’ Week with his first production (When You Finish Saving The World) and Kelly Reichardt will receive the Golden Coach of the Directors’ Fortnight. But the real attraction of the day will be when Tom Cruise lands on the red carpet for the first time in thirty years. Top Gun: Maverick must set fire. Fasten your seat belt!
